Vying for the favorite aunt/uncle positions

A week or so ago, Amy called and asked me if the kids were available on a Friday night. Um, YEAH!!! (aka date night for us!)
So they had an amazing time with Uncle Jeff and Aunt Amy who I think made all their dreams come true in the 5 hours they spent together!
Now I've got to snap them back to reality...Julia seems to think every "lipstick-ey" she sees when we are out shopping now belongs to her! =)

Thanks, Amy and Jeff! This outing really "bumped" Amy up in Julia's prayer time...Tyler no longer leads the pack, but she thanks God every night first for "Aunt Amy."

Last Friday, Uncle Mat walked in with a dollar bill for each of the kids, which Julia (my saver) promptly placed in her purse. Then she flashed one of those faces you nearly can't say 'no' to and lo and behold next thing I knew and Mat was giving in to her every whim at the beauty parlor.

Later that day, Ryan was super excited to find an envelope for him and one for Julia in the mail. Aunt Kathy had sent Happy Easter cards and McDonalds gift cards for the kids. Yea!

Do you think they are loved?

Mom: You're Ruining My Life!

See this sweet little boy who just turned one?
Well, he's growing up...fast!
So, earlier this week I was trying to get him to have some quiet time up in his room while Julia was napping.
All was going peacefully well...
Until we heard...
THE music.
You know, the music every mom dreads...especially during naptime!
The ice cream truck!

Ryan's eyes opened wide and he was starting to jump up to go catch the truck.
And I did it.
"No, stay right here!"
And then he said it.
"You are ruining my life."
Words I didn't quite expect to hear at the ripe ol'age of 5!

Incidentally, I snapped this pic a week or so ago while shopping...seemed to fit with this post! =)

Help Bring Vanya Home to the Oberhauser Family!

I recently received an email from a high school girlfriend I wanted to share with ya'll. My friend, Joni Oberhauser, and her husband already have 5 children, so imagine my surprise when I got this message...

Subject: What the world needs...

is another little obie boy running around. ;)

we are expecting- again! but this time, we found out what we are having, and it's another BOY!! ;

AND...

he is already born. in fact, he is 18 months old, his name is vanya, and he lives in an orphanage in eastern europe. vanya is also "special needs"- at this point, we have vague information, but we know that vanya is mostly blind and has some degree of brain damage and heart disease. getting medical information from foreign countries is difficult, so we will know much more when he gets home to us in the states and can see some specialists!

you may be curious as to why we are doing this...
  1. God has been growing in our hearts a desire to adopt for years. up until now, we have not had clear direction in this.
  2. we realize that we ourselves have been adopted: But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" -Galatians 4:4-6
  3. we know that every life is precious in God's sight and that vanya is "fearfully and wonderfully made!" (psalm 139:13-16)
  4. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world. -james 1:27
  5. Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. -proverbs 24:11. a special needs orphan like vanya would have a slim chance of survival if not adopted, and we also feel the burden of "the great commission" in this circumstance (matthew 28:18-20).

you may be wondering how this came about...
  1. we recieved an email containing the blog of a young american woman living in eastern europe who volunteers at vanya's orphanage and is advocating for him.
  2. we read the blog and felt the Lord leading us to pursue adopting vanya.

you may be wondering about the process...
  1. we are currently beginning our "home study" which will be a process of much paperwork, background checks, interviews, etc that will take approx. 1-2 months.
  2. we are also putting together our "dossier" which is a HUGE personal portfolio that we must prepare and submit to the courts and authorities in vanya's home country.
  3. sometime this spring or early summer we will need to make two trips to eastern europe in order to bring our little boy home.
  4. this little adventure will cost about 25 thousand dollars- YIKES! but we are trusting the Lord, and He is already providing a little here and a little there. our family is enjoying working together to cut the grocery budget down as much as possible in order to use that saved money towards bringing vanya home!

If you'd like to help this family financially, you can learn how to do so through the links above.

They are also planning a garage sale in the Edwardsville area for April 23-24. If you have "treasures" you'd like to get rid of and allow them to sell in the sale, they are looking for donations....and of course, shoppers!

Also, a cool girl on Etsy decided to donate 20% of her sales to help bring Vanya home. I just ordered a WAY CUTE one-of-a-kind outfit. You can visit her site here.
Apples and Pears Dress and Ruffle Capris size 4-5 RTS

Garden and Special Visitor

You might remember that last year we accidentally grew some fantastic cantalope in our front landscape. You also might know that I am so NOT a green thumb. I mean, even flowers that are delivered to me seem to die untimely deaths. Therefore, I've never tried to grow anything with the kids. Last year's "accident" was just the confidence booster we needed to buy some seeds and experiment. Fingers crossed!
First stop, we buy a little greenhouse and I let the kids pick out packets of seeds. They were both super excited to get this process going!
Jeff was out of town all week and my friend Theresa was on spring break from her job, so she spent an entire day with us! It was SO SUPER nice getting to hang out again. Theresa is one of the girls I lived with in Webster Groves and Central West End before Jeff and I got married. Jeff's parents watched the kids some that day, and we were even able to have a nice kid-free fancy yum dinner out.
We're experiencing FAST growth in our greenhouse, and had to remove the lid to make room for all our sprouts!

Kindergarten Registration

Today I signed this little boy up for kindergarten...
...all the while he hung on to my leg and said,
"I don't want to go to school. I just want to stay
home and play games with you!"

Princess Tea

It's been kinda crazy around here, and I've neglected the blog a bit...last week my mom and Julia had a fun little afternoon I didn't want to miss recording...
Our princesses pose on the red (and black and khaki) carpet before the tea party.
Julia was in princess heaven when my mom brought over her gown, tiara, slippers and wand for their grand tea.

Jeff's parents arrived home today from their L.O.N.G. trip west. The kids wasted no time before visiting, and Ryan wanted grandma to bring him to the library (he's learned Eville has more Batman DVDs than GCarbon), and he fell asleep there, so he's spending the night. Julia has been super-clingy lately and she hung with Jeff and I and we visited Peel for dinner. Thumbs up. Julia loved their ceasar salad, which makes me heart it that much more!

And tomorrow is kindgarten registration. I am in complete denial. Not. Happening.

..with some cool friends.
(Julia, Madeline, top Mouse, Mason and Ryan).

More pics to come soon...I'm still playing catch-up from being gone!

Grandma's Cookies

My Grandma frequently brings over cookies for the kids and Jeff which I keep in the freezer.
I think it's so cute how she will put the date she baked them and rate herself on their taste.
I wonder how she decided to upgrade this batch. =)

Valentine Treats

A big mess in the kitchen
+ lots of Valentine fun for the kids
= a great way to pass a sick/snow day!

Um, yes. Totally a pullup on her head. This pic in itself explains how well the potty training is going with a stubborn 2 yr old.

= Valentine treats for family/friends.

How you don't want to wake up at 3am

3something am early Tuesday morning...
I am in a dead sleep.
I feel eyes on me.
And then hear, "Mommy. I just threw up. I don't like it when I do that."
Ya, me neither, buddy!
101.4 temp.
He wakes up temp free and acts fine all day long.
He plays outside in the snow multiple times.

3something early Wednesday morning...
I am in a dead sleep.
I feel a hand touch mine.
(Possibly more jarring than just the stare!)
And then hear, "Mommy, my pillow is all wet."
101.9 temp.
He seems fine today.
Go figure??!

Weekend Retreat

Look where we woke up this weekend!
Ok..well, technically, here. =)
THANKS, Mom and Dad! We got away kid-free to the lake!!!
We slept in (this alone was bliss!), shopped, dined out, watched movies, read and totally chilled out!!!
The kids had their own fun here at home with Grammy and Papa; dad brought Ry to the Great Train Expo, and Julia shopped til she literally dropped (well, fell asleep in the stroller...) with Grammy and Aunt Debbie.
Julia still has her horrible cough...the onion didn't work any magic, although I did leave it in her room (or rather, my mom did despite the crazy look she gave me when I explained it to her!) all weekend out of desperate hope. We're making the haul to St. John's to the ENT tomorrow to find out what's up with her as long as this blizzard holds off! Fingers crossed!

Crazy?

Tonight when I was checking out Charisa's blog, I came across her sisters blog link and read some advice on how to get rid of a cough/cold.
Because Julia woke up in the middle of the night last night with a horrible sounding cough, she's sleeping next to an onion tonight.
.
Jeff thinks I have totally lost it.

Perhaps he is right.

Guess we'll see in the morning!
